Dear chamber and community members,
It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead what I consider to be one of the most effective and progressive chambers of commerce in the U.S.
It is extra special because I am the third of four generations in Terrell. I was educated here, a proud Fighting Tiger, and my life has been influenced by family, mentors and friends with a common love for this community.
I have spent most of my life employed by the oldest ongoing business in Kaufman County, founded in Terrell in 1875, and is now one of Texas’ largest and oldest independent banks and is still headquartered in downtown Terrell.
This position is one I take very seriously. The annual budget for the chamber and the convention and visitors bureau exceeds $900,000. We are rated in the top 10 chambers in the DFW Metroplex based on the size of our financial responsibility.
The cooperation and team work between the city of Terrell, Terrell ISD, Terrell Economic Development Corporation, chamber of commerce and county government is responsible for so many successes and has forged the local pride so proudly hailed as “Terrell America.”
The chamber is the glue that binds these organizations together for the common good of all citizens.
It is imperative that this spirit of cooperation, communication and transparency remain our number one priority going forward.
In 2016, Terrell won its sixth Texas Community Economic Development Award, a feat unequaled by any other community in Texas.
We will continue to focus on the attraction of industry to expand and diversify our tax base, provide jobs and motivate housing development. Likewise, we will continue to support our locally owned small businesses with events such as Christmas in July, ArtWalk, Small Business Saturday, Terrell Heritage Jubilee, etc.
The phenomenal retail growth visible to all is a result of years of effort between the chamber, city and EDC.
We are seeing a significant increase in visitors to Terrell and their purchases and sales tax dollars are greatly appreciated.
The 2017 board has accepted the challenge to create an identity and strengthen Terrell’s image as a destination.
I am proud to be associated with the many selfless volunteers that make up the chamber board, its committees and membership.
When you combine these resources with our dedicated and professional staff, the sky is the limit. Please join us as we lead Terrell down a path of success.
Ken Lane is chairman of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
